主祷文的序言是:“我们在天上的父”（太6:9）9）。这教训我们，

  1. 当祷告的时候，我们要就近上帝，确信祂父般的慈爱，而且我们与祂这种慈爱有份（路11:13；13；罗8:15）15）；
  2. 要有敬畏之心，以及其它各种孩子般的性情（赛64:9）9）、属天的情感（诗123:1；1；哀3:41）41），并对祂的主权、威严和恩惠的临在有正确的认识（赛63:15-16；16；尼1:4-6）6）；
  3. 同时，也教训我们要与他人一起祷告，并为他人祷告（徒12:5）5）。
